Registration

Register .mil for 1 to 1 years. Names can use letters, numbers and hyphens, from 1 to 63 characters, and cannot start or end with a hyphen. Only ASCII names are accepted. Proof of eligibility is needed. The registry checks it before the domain goes live.

Renewal

Renew .mil any time before expiry. Auto renew is available in the client area. After expiry there is a grace period of about 30 days where renewal is still at the normal price, but the website may stop working. After that comes a redemption period of about 30 days with a higher restore fee. When all periods end, the name is released and anyone can register it.

Transfer

Transfers of .mil need the domain to be unlocked and a valid auth code from the current registrar. A domain cannot move within 60 days of registration or a previous transfer. The registrant email must approve the request. Typical time is 5 to 7 days. Eligibility rules also apply to the new owner.

Lifecycle

A .mil name goes through these stages: Active for the paid term, then Expired with a grace period of about 30 days, then Redemption for about 30 days, then Pending delete, then released.

DNSSEC
